The intersection of faith and finance is never easy to navigate as a local church leader.
The topic of money is inescapable for anyone who leads a church, so while many of us would rather lead people toward Jesus, we must also embrace the truth that the functions of a local church do not operate for free.
Choosing leadership for a church ministry is a tricky business. Pastoral search committees and hiring new staff members can be one of the most sanctifying experiences for churches. As you wade through dozens of resumes piled up on your desk, you feel overwhelmed by the sea of potential candidates for the job. You wonder if the person will possess the skills necessary for the ministry or be a “good fit” for the family, and you pray you do not hire a clown who simply knew how to interview well.
Yesterday I received a letter from a reader asking about plagiarizing sermons, and the writer made it clear when the subject came up many in the room thought it was not only acceptable but there were no moral issues at work. The issue is not professional ethics or intellectual property. The issue, the reader said to me, was about “authentic spirituality.”
Sometimes church leaders have to be reactionary.
There is a family tragedy. A church member walks into your office unexpectedly with a load of gripes. Your wife goes into labor.
Okay, you get the point. We can’t always plan ahead. We can’t always be proactive.
In my career, I work with a lot of people in a lot of settings. You might say my job involves a lot of relationships. In the process, I have learned the key to healthy relationships is communication.
I was recently asked my thoughts on helping a church with declining attendance. The following is the advice I gave.
